An Ode to Goose

Yesterday I laid my greatest treasure to rest. He was a 1250lb bay gelding named Goose, and he was the first, and greatest, love of my life. His death was completely unexpected, and far too sudden — many years sooner than any of us ever imagined. He left behind me, his heartbroken mom, his fairy godmother L, his favorite (human) companion M, and his (equine) girlfriend Alex. Not to mention his fan club, for everyone that met Goose loved him. He was a barn favorite, an all-star under saddle, a strikingly handsome gentleman, and a cuddly goofball who made everyone smile. He had the face of a saint and the most enchanting eyes. He made my heart melt every time I saw him, and he gave me more in this life than I deserved.

Lemon Cream Flax Muffins

I can’t believe Christmas has already come and gone. It felt like the just holiday flew by this year, despite a 4-day weekend – very long by my standards – and two separate celebrations. I always think after the fact that I wish I’d gotten more into the holiday spirit. After all, it is my favorite time of year, but somehow it always sneaks up and then disappears, before I even have time to register it’s presence. But New Years is still looming in the near future, so there’s one more exciting event to look forward to before the long winter. Plus now that the holiday has passed, we can move onto bigger and better things that aren’t all about Christmas cookies and cranberries and gingerbread. To be honest, those are all things I LOVE, but so are things like these outstanding and unbelievably scrumptious lemon cream flax muffins – that are not the tiniest bit festive, but are every bit delicious. Salted Caramel Sauce and a giveaway!

When I set out to make chocolate bread pudding last weekend, I knew it had to have a caramel sauce to go with it. Sauces are such a vital part of some dishes, adding an extra element of flavor and texture that brings the entire dish to a completely different level. I’ve made a handful of caramel sauces in my day, though typically as a part of a recipe, and never just to stand alone like this one. I can remember back to the early days of my baking when I couldn’t execute a successful caramel recipe if my life depended on it, either because I didn’t use a thermometer or my nerves won out or I just didn’t have the confidence. Over time, it’s become something I can conquer easily, a simple element that multiples flavor like nothing else. (more…)

Layered Mocha Mousse Torte

This recipe is a favorite in my family – my mom has been making it for as long as I can remember, and I’ve even taken to making it from time to time, despite my love for always trying new things.  It’s a great-no bake dessert, it looks fancy and sophisticated, but it’s actually pretty easy to make! Plus, it tastes like heaven – pillowy mousse and coffee whipped cream, layered with coffee-flavored chocolate wafer crumbs. Nothing wrong with that!


Scups in the Harbour

Now that I don’t live right in Boston, I miss it every second I’m away. So I make trips there often, and always try to find a yummy food place I haven’t tried yet (or hit up the usual favorites — can’t go wrong there!). This past weekend, a few friends from Sydney and I had brunch planned, but no destination. One of them mentioned Scups, which I had heard of, but knew nothing about. However, I knew it had gotten consistently good reviews, and it was on the outskirts of Boston so sure to be an adventure to find. I’m comfortable in Boston proper, driving around and not getting lost, but anything outside of the city is tricky. So we went for a mini road trip! (more…)

Strawberry Cupcakes

Since my last post, life has gotten significantly more busy – who knew that was even possible? I have two big final presentations coming up next Tuesday, and two the following week as well, and as many seniors in the senior class, myself and my fellow teammates seem to be finding it hard to produce any real work. So a week before these big presentation, we decide it’s just about time to get started, then run around like chickens with our heads cut off because we started too late. Thank goodness there’s only two weeks left of this insanity. (more…)

Domain Name Change! Plus Raspberry Lemonade Bars

Exciting news! I have registered a domain name!!! It’s a bit different than it was before, but still the same idea — the new URL is Since I’m mostly internet/blog illiterate, I’m not quite sure how this works, but I’m fairly certain that the old URL will still work, but the new one is better! It’s all mine, and oh so official. So… welcome! I will be teaching myself how to really build a website over the next few months, and hopefully it will become a beautiful masterpiece. (more…)
