On September 1st Kevin and I celebrated our first year of dating, and hopefully just the first in a string of many long, happy years to come! Sometimes that amount of time seems so long to me, while other times it feels like nothing at all. But it’s an occasion nonetheless, and so we decided to celebrate! I had been wanting to go to Craigie on Main for a very long time, and so we decided (me mostly) that it was high time to give it a try. We went on a Saturday night when it was full and bustling, but somehow managed to nab a couple of seats at the chef’s table right alongside the kitchen.
Last Friday, I was fortunate enough to attend the debut tour organized by Boston Food Finds in the Beacon Hill and Back Bay neighborhoods. I was thrilled to be invited, and even more thrilled when we were given our list of stops for the afternoon. Despite the sweltering weather, I arrived ready for our culinary adventure. In the lobby of the stunning and unique Liberty Hotel, I met Coco and Joey, Meghan and Jody and our gracious host Audrey to kick off our tour. First stop: downstairs at Scampo.
When I saw the first cranberries of the season arrive in grocery stores, I got so excited I bought a big container of them, and proceeded to leave them in the refrigerator for weeks. I’d notice them from time to time, and briefly consider what I could do with them, but it wasn’t until the season’s first blizzard a few weeks ago when I was stuck inside all day that I finally forced myself to put them to use. Very uncharacteristically, I found a vegan bread recipe (originally Vegan Pumpkin Cranberry Apple Pecan Bread from Joy the Baker) that sounded incredible – so I decided to give it a try. Admittedly, I added a couple of eggs to bind the bread and keep it from crumbling, but apparently it’s just as good without! (more…)
I know, I know, I’ve seriously been slacking lately. Every day when I come home and I open my computer, I see the little link to my blog sitting there, waiting, and my heart weeps a little bit — where has the crazy, passionate baker in me gone? Is she coming back soon? Because honestly, I kind of miss her like CRAZY. Here’s the deal: life is kicking my butt! (more…)
I first got the idea for overnight oats from one of my favorite blogs, Carrots ‘N’ Cake. The blogger, Tina, raves about them constantly so I figured it was time to give them a try. I absolutely love oats, in oatmeal, in cookies, in bread, as a crumb topping — oats are awesome! But I’d never used them in this particular way before. They’re a fantastic breakfast, because you throw it together the night before, and when you wake up, it’s an instant breakfast! All you have to do is pull out a spoon, and dive in. (more…)
This past Saturday morning, I woke up with a craving to bake. Surprise surprise. But the lady of the weekend wanted something with protein, and I wanted to make muffins. We went back and forth, before I opted against baking, which was a sad, sad moment. We polished off the rest of the Carrot Coconut Bread, and had some giant vanilla lattes. Not an awful way to start the day.
Hello freedom! This is my first post in my post-college days. It’s not “official” until graduation next weekend, but it’s safe to say that the worst is over. Today is also my last day of interning, which is even more awesome. I’ve been in school for the past 18 years of my life, and working or interning for the past 6 — so I think it’s about time for some stress-free living! After today, my responsibilities will be so few: decorate my apartment, find a cat, find a roommate, and prepare for the working world. Doesn’t sound so awful, right? (more…)
Today was a big day in my world. Yesterday was a big day too. Yesterday, I had my very last college class ever, and today we had our senior breakfast, and I had my first work orientation event. I’m growing up, and it’s exciting and terrifying all at the same time. (more…)
Since my last post, life has gotten significantly more busy – who knew that was even possible? I have to big final presentations coming up next Tuesday, and two the following week as well, and as many seniors in the senior class, myself and my fellow teammates seem to be finding it hard to produce any real work. So a week before these big presentation, we decide it’s just about time to get started, then run around like chickens with our heads cut off because we started too late. Thank goodness there’s only two weeks left of this insanity. (more…)
These cookies are, quite surprisingly, exactly what their name promises them to be. They taste like banana chocolate chip cookies, but have a consistency very similar to banana bread. Who’d have thought it possible? I’ve never had cookies anything like these — they are much cakier than I usually like my cookies to be, but it works pretty darn well. I got the recipe from Carrots ‘N’ Cake, but changed it around quite a bit.
Often times, it will take me a solid hour to decide what to bake when it’s baking time. I am extremely indecisive, and when there are so many wonderful recipes to choose from, how do I pick the recipe? What if I make a mistake and choose the wrong one? Well, obviously the world will still go on, but I always want to make just the perfect thing for the time. This Easter was an exception to that trend — five minutes into the search, I saw a picture of a fruit tart and I was sold. The pastry cream was completely unlike a typical pastry cream — it didn’t have you adding the dairy into the base, but instead chilling it (just the cooked yolk and sugar mixture) then adding the cream once it was whipped to stiff peaks, creating a texture much closer to whipped cream and less similar to a custard. It seemed springy to me, and the opportunity to pick and choose the fruits to adorn the top gave me some creative liberties, plus it would be visually impressive. (more…)
