Good Eats and Sweet Treats from My Small Boston Kitchen

The Barking Crab

The Barking Crab is somewhat of a Boston landmark. Open in 1994, they provide the city with some amazing seafood options, in a casual, laid-back atmosphere right on the water. In my nearly 10 years living in this city, I haven’t ever had a chance to check it out until a couple of weeks ago, when they hosted a PR event and invited some local foodie folks.

If you’ve ever been in/around the Seaport area, you can’t miss it. The big Barking Crab sign is a part of the landscape down there, and was always a point of intrigue for me. During the colder months, they have an indoor dining area, but in the summer they open their tent, which features picnic tables and beachy decor. The hanging lights are made from lobster traps laced with little twinkle lights, and buoys and other boating paraphernalia lines the walls and ceilings.

My roommate and I took it upon ourselves to try a sampling of their cocktails, so we could get an idea of their different offerings. Clockwise from the top left: Contessa (Wire Works Gin, Aperol, Vermouth), Oyster Shooter (Raw oyster, Firepuncher Vodka, Homemade Bloody Mix), Crabby Mai Tai (Diplomatic Anejo, Gosslings, Curacao, Orgreat & Fresh Lime), and a Moscow Mule (Tito’s Vodka, Ginger Beer, Fresh Lime). Aside from the Mai Tai which was too sweet for my taste, the drinks were delicious and strong. Just how I like ’em!

I ate about 25 of these mini Lobster Rolls, which were full of lightly dressed lobster meat. I loved the the lobster was the star of the show, and wasn’t hidden under mounds of dressing. They’re served straight up on toasted, buttery rolls, with a little piece of romaine for crunch. Yum!

We also noshed on perfectly cooked Bacon Wrapped Scallops, and these incredible Crab Cakes, which were loaded with crab meat. Like the lobster rolls, these crab cakes were light on other fillers, so the sweet crab meat was front and center. They were completely addictive and we both ate way too many.

Last but certainly not least were the calamari (not pictured) and the fried clams, and both were divine. Just as we were gathering our things to go, this giant plate of clams and an accompanying basket of onion rings (so good!) were dropped at our table. Obviously we had to eat them….

We rolled ourselves out of there stuffed to the gills, and happy. Oh, so happy. And as if the lovely evening, great food, and great company wasn’t enough, I scored a free $25 gift certificate, and already cannot wait to go back. Hello, summer in New England!
