Good Eats and Sweet Treats from My Small Boston Kitchen

Lunching with Farm Feedery

It’s safe to say I have been a lazy blogger lately. L-a-z-y. Work has been busy, life has been busy, physical therapy fills my empty time, and the weather has been too nice to ignore. I think it’s just that time of year, when the world comes back to life, and we all remember how amazing it is. It’s easy to leave the kitchen behind in favor of sunshine! But as we speak, there’s a loaf of banana bread in the oven, so that’s progress, right??

But all of that aside, the real motivation for writing today is Farm Feedery (formerly Farmavore). I don’t generally get so excited about a product I review that I’ll write about it the same day I consume it, but this was a different experience. James at Farm Feedery contacted me back at the beginning of April, offering up a couple of free meals to try in exchange for a review if I liked them. He explained the concept — that Farm Feedery delivers healthy and delicious lunches straight to your office, which for someone like me who makes lunch at home every day was an exciting prospect. I love to eat out (duh?), but I’m generally pretty careful with how I eat during the week, and money conscious, too, which is why I always make lunch at home. But that gets really boring, so the idea of having healthy, chef- and dietitian-approved meals to look forward to in the middle of the workday is a total treat.

Because of knee surgery and a big office move to Downtown Boston, my schedule was nuts for a few weeks. James was awesome about accommodating my availability, and yesterday I finally received my two free meals! Laura from Farm Feedery dropped off my meals, and she was great. She actually made an hour+ trek into the city to meet me, had the guts to park her car on city streets, and even spent 10 minutes inside with me chatting about the mountains, food, social media, and city living. All of this made for such a nice intro to the company — and I hadn’t even eaten my food yet!

Given an insane work schedule this week, I ended up enjoying my first Farm Feedery meal for dinner tonight, and it was awesome. A few of my favorite things about it:

  • The packaging is minimal, clearly labeled, microwaveable, and recyclable
  • All of the ingredients are listed so you know exactly what you’re eating (and all the ingredients are normal, natural things)
  • Each meal has nutrition facts, so you know the basic nutritional information (calories, fat, sodium) about what you’re eating

My first meal was a Rosemary Pork Tenderloin with Sweet Potato Hash. Right off the bat, I was thinking — pork can be dry, and “hash” is generally unhealthy. But guess what? The pork was juicy and moist, and the sweet potatoes, while super flavorful, were a really healthy accompaniment. The meal also included green beans, which were plain on their own, but went really well with everything else.

The whole meal included only 9 ingredients, which was surprising given the amount of flavor. If you start with fresh, high-quality ingredients though, I often believe that simple is the best. Everything was perfectly cooked, the flavors went together so well, and for only 630 calories, the serving was huge! I think my only complaint (if it can even be called that) is that the meal was so big I couldn’t finish it! I shared a few pieces of pork and sweet potato with my roommate, who loved it all too.

For my second meal — tomorrow’s lunch — I got a Grilled Lamb Burger and Arugula Salad finished with Lemon Oregano Vinaigrette. While I’m not the world’s biggest lamb fan (see more here), I’m pretty excited about it — the accompaniments look delicious. Another thing that’s great about these meals is the balance between protein, carbs, and veggies. For my palate, it’s pretty spot on. But, there are options for those who like less meat, or no meat at all. They offer 1, 3, or 5-meal plans, which cost $12, $11, and $10/meal respectively.

I can’t say enough good things about my first Farm Feedery experience. If you’re curious to know more, please hop on over to their website, follow them on Twitter, or like them on Facebook!
