Good Eats and Sweet Treats from My Small Boston Kitchen

Chocolate Fudge Swirled Lemon Ricotta Tart

Happy Summer, friends! Can you believe we’re already three weeks deep in June? If anyone knows how to slow down the remaining weeks of summer, I will gladly overnight you a giant batch of your favorite cookies in exchange for your secrets. All jokes aside, we’ve been blessed with the most magnificent weather the past couple of weeks, and while my gardens could really use some rain, the sunshine and blue skies do wonders for mood demeanor.

I haven’t been doing a ton of baking, instead opting to spend my time growing my new business, RENEW. Many days have been spent sorting through assorted flower stems, putting arrangements together and taking endless photos. Nights are now spent with a calligraphy or watercolor pen in hand, scrawling all sorts of empowering words and phrases on any scraps of paper I can find. It pleases me to no end and is one of my favorite ways to spend time, but nights can while away so easily, leaving little time for the bagillion other things I should be doing. Somehow I get the sense though, that if you spend your time doing things that make you happy and offer you true joy, there’s really nothing to apologize for.

I made this tart ages ago, and really only decided to try it because the photos in the original recipe were so incredibly enticing. I hadn’t ever made anything with chocolate and lemon combined, and the flavors didn’t seem like they would complement each other all that well. I’m so glad I took the plunge though, because this tart is divine.

I followed the original recipe pretty much exactly, and found myself with ample leftover chocolate sauce. I promise you, it takes divine on a slew of other delicious desserts, so an excess of it is really nothing to be worried about. I really loved the candied lemons, which end up being tender and sweet, with a somewhat strange texture, but they go beautifully with the rest of the dish. This tart is fairly light — perfect for summer — and as stunning as it is tasty. While a bit time-consuming, it’s not a particularly challenging dessert, you just have to carve out a chunk of time to completely all of the individual components.

I’m feeling lazy today, so I’ll send you off to Half Baked Harvest for the original recipe and incredible photos.

What sorts of fun are you getting up to this summer?
